Alberta does not have living wills. Instead, we have personal directives. You may not be able to make decisions if you suffer a serious:
-
injury – like from a car accident
-
illness – like a heart attack or disease

A personal directive is a legal document you make in case you can not make your own personal decisions in the future. A personal directive:
-
is optional and voluntary
-
names the person or people you have picked to make personal decisions for you – a person you name on the personal directive is called an agent
-
makes sure your written instructions are known in case something happens to you
-
only comes into effect if you are found to lack capacity – that means you are not able to make your own decisions

When you make a personal directive, the person or people you pick to be your agent have legal authority to make personal decisions for you. This could be temporary or long term.

Meet Liz
When we moved to Alberta in 1993, Lauren and I set up We Can Help U Calgary to help people who were not too sure know how to fill out forms, needed help, or had questions about their taxes and bookkeeping. We even helped navigate them through the roads they were travelling. We talked a lot to people about what they needed to get their day-to-day life in order.
I was lucky enough to get a full-time job with Registries when Alberta privatized the motor vehicle operations to private Registry owners. I worked for 23 years at one Registry, where I learned how to do regular Registry duties, but I also taught myself to do Land Title transfers, Advanced Corporate Registry work, Immigration Documents, Pension requests, as a Commissioner for Oaths in and for Alberta I helped people with Statutory Declarations, final surrogate documents, land title work...

Liz helped me with my divorce. I first met Liz when she was working at the Registry and she helped my family to settle into Calgary life. I called her last year to tell me what to do about divorce. I can now continue on with my life, safe and secure in my free life in Canada.
